Dark History: Understanding the CIA’s Historical Use of Funding Fronts Prof. David Price Saint Martin’s University During the 1950s and 1960s, the Central Intelligence Agency established foundations and businesses known as “funding fronts,” which appeared to be normal functioning organizations, but were in fact arms of the CIA used to run overseas operations or direct funding to projects aligned with Agency interests. In the '60s, several of these funding fronts were exposed by government officials and investigative journalists, and either shut down or continued using other sources of funds. Prof. Price will describe methods and results of a current research project using the Freedom of Information Act and archives to understand how these CIA funding fronts worked, how they violated the CIA’s charter, and how they threatened the development of dissent and democratic movements in the United States and abroad.
