About the OWAC Study Abroad Scholarship
Dear OWAC Friends,
As 2023 comes to a close, we’d like to thank you for your continued financial support. Your contributions made it possible for OWAC to bring speakers on Russia, Ukraine, Morocco, NATO and the European Union to our new meeting room in Tumwater. Every day, we follow global issues as they unfold, so we can invite speakers to help you understand the complexities of geopolitics. Now more than ever, our South Sound community needs organizations like OWAC to inform us about and remind us that we are part of a larger, interconnected world whether it is in the Middle East, Africa, the Americas, Asia or Europe.
In my last communication to you, I mentioned that OWAC decided to establish a scholarship fund because we identified a local problem: when our college students want to study abroad, they have expenses BEFORE they arrive in a host country, but those upfront expenses are often not paid for by existing scholarship programs.
So, in November, with guidance from OWAC Board members from St. Martin's University, South Puget Sound Community College and the Evergreen State College, we created the “OWAC Study Abroad Scholarship Program.” Our scholarship fund will assist already-vetted and accepted study-abroad students with the many pre-departure expenses like passports, immunizations, application fees, deposits, etc. that their study abroad stipends don’t cover. These expenses are typically modest, but for lower income students or those who have no family support, these incidental costs can frequently present insurmountable barriers. Today, we ask for your financial support to connect South Sound students with the world through our new scholarship fund.
OWAC has seeded this new program with a small amount of money from our general fund. We hope you'll consider contributing to this fund as part of your year-end (tax deductible) giving. This new scholarship fund greatly assists OWAC in fulfilling one of our strategic goals:
to involve and engage younger people to prepare them for challenges awaiting them as they assume the mantle of leadership in our very complex world.

You and I are citizens of the world’s largest democracy, which means we have a special responsibility to be informed and engaged in issues that define our times. Helping students who want to study abroad, but may not have sufficient funds, supports our mission: to promote an informed citizenry to guide our nation’s foreign policies and advance our democratic values of openness and respect for human rights.
We hope you will support OWAC's new scholarship fund as you consider your 2023 year-end giving. We deeply appreciate your continued financial support and generosity!
Sincerely,
Nina Carter, OWAC President
